Road Tunnel Ventilation - Tamoios Highway

The new mountain stretch of the Rodovia dos Tamoios connects the cities of Caraguatatuba and São José dos Campos/SP, and is used as an uphill track. It is 21.5 km long and has four tunnels which, together, are 12.8 km long. The largest is considered to be the longest tunnel in Brazil, with 5.6 km, setting new standards in safety and ventilation.

FanTR supplied a total of 76 pieces of equipment, developed in an integrated way between the construction company and the Swiss consultancy Amberg Engineering, using CFD software for a more efficient configuration of the entire ventilation system.

There were 54 Ø1610mm, 110 kW jet fans for the main tunnel, six Ø2310mm, 110 kW exhaust fans for massive smoke extraction in the event of a fire and 16 Ø700mm, 30 kW jet fans for the service tunnel.

A few days before going into operation, an official ventilation test was carried out simulating a fire inside the larger tunnel. The aim was to train the security teams and officially validate the efficiency of the underground ventilation system.
